Cheshire Cat – Black Light Puppet

Each summer I work with a children’s theater program in my hometown of Globe, Arizona. The program culminates in a full-scale musical production. This year we are mounting a musical version of Alice in Wonderland.
Here is the head of break-apart black light Cheshire Cat puppet I’ve been making for the show.

  1. Do you still have this puppet?

    • It’s being kept at the Cobre Valley Center for the Arts with the theater’s general costume collection. On occasion, the children’s theater program has retrospectives which it will likely be included with. Why do you ask?

Can you give me an idea of roughly how you made this. I have an event that’s Alice in Wonderland themed and have been trying to find a cheshire cat puppet and I absolutely love this and would like something similar for my event.

    • It’s tricky to explain because it’s a pretty involved stagecraft process for making characters that my mother developed and taught me, which I altered a bit to meet the needs of this puppet.

I don’t feel comfortable going through the whole process on the open internet. However, shoot me an email and I’ll give you some tips and online resources to help you make your own.
